For those of you who have a stash of pure wool, treat yourself to one of our knitting patterns to knit-and-felt a bag and/or flower. We can supply you with feltable pure wool and circular knitting needles to complete your project. For those who need a guiding hand to perfect your knitting techniques, we offer a couple of excellent books.

Patterns
All patterns are £3.25 each, including p&p (UK). The wool you use to knit and felt these bags must NOT be machine washable or superwash varieties. A wonderful selection of suitable wools and the circular knitting needles are available from this Sheepfold website (see below).
Simple shoulder bag pattern Flower bag pattern
To complete this knit-and-felt pattern you will require: approx 200g aran weight pure wool; one pair of 5.5 mm straight needles; one pair of 4.5 mm double-ended needles; and button/toggle or 20 cm zip to make closure.
To complete this knit-and-felt pattern you will require: approx 150g aran weight pure wool in main colour; approx 125g aran weight pure wool in contrast colour; one pair of 6 mm straight needles; 6 mm circular needle (or four double-ended needles, if you prefer); and one pair of 4.5 mm double-ended needles.

Herdwick shopping tote pattern Duffle bag pattern
To complete this knit-and-felt pattern you will require: approx 450–500g aran weight pure wool; one pair of 5.5 mm straight needles; 5.5 mm circular needle (80 cm long if possible); and one pair of 4.5 mm double-ended needles. To complete this knit-and-felt pattern you will require: approx 300g aran weight pure wool in main colour; approx 100g aran weight pure wool in contrast colour; 5.5 mm crochet hool for round base version or one pair of 5.5 mm straight needles for square base version; 5.5 mm circular needle (or four double-ended needles if you prefer); and one pair of 4.5 mm double-ended needles.
Chunky Shopper pattern Three Felted Flowers pattern
To complete this knit-and-felt pattern you will require: approx 500g chunky weight pure wool; one pair of 8 mm straight needles; 8 mm circular needle (80 cm long if possible); and one pair of 6.5 mm double-ended needles. To complete this knit-and-felt pattern you will require: oddments of pure wool in three or more colours; one pair of straight needles typically 0.5 or 1.0 mm greater in diameter than you would normally use with the wool you have chosen; and one pair of double-ended needles in the same size.

Wensleydale Longwool

Please note that, because of the long staple and high crimp of the fleece from this sheep, when the yarn is wetted or felted the crimp reappears giving a boucle effect to the knitting or felt. This effect is known as cockling.
